Prospect Playhouse - Post-Ivan images

Hurricane Ivan slammed into Grand Cayman on September 11th, 2004. Many fine books have been published which adequately do justice to the power of the storm, the devastation caused to the Cayman Islands, and the magnificent recovery efforts which still continue as this page is written. However, we felt that you would like to see the effect of Ivan on the Prospect Playhouse and the actions that the Restoration team took so that not long after Ivan, plays were being performed on a temporary stage.

Stage roof is ripped away

Most of the stage roof was torn away. The stage is at the northern end of the building. Steel cladding was ripped off the side of the building and roof supports were twisted.

Carnage on-stage

This image shows how curtains were ripped apart, lights and other hung elements were torn down and the stage effectively rendered unusable.

More stage damage

The Prospect Playhouse stage floor constructed of ply mounted over foam padding and therefore wonderful for dance was critically damaged and will have to be entirely replaced.

Auditorium or pandemonium

This image shows the auditorium as it was left by our costly visitor, Ivan. Note that all of the ceiling tiles came down, followed by some of the ceiling tile supports. We have been able to save many chairs and tables.

Temporary wall and roof

A tarpaulin wall and roof was erected to cover usable stage area so that small productions could continue, bringing in badly needed revenue.

How quick bright things come to confusion.  (A Midsummer's Night's Dream movie)
